Unity audiodevice2/3/2024 ![]() It should be the same coming out as it was going in. You don't want any of those stages to add any more (or take away any) gain to the signal. In live sound, for instance, you have the microphone, the preamplifier, the mixer, any processing units (reverb, compression, EQ), etc. Things do get to be a bit more complicated with every piece of equipment added to the audio chain. The noise would have been MUCH lower, and there would have been no nasty distortion. If my friend had had the optimal recording level to begin with (setting his gain knob to get a good strong signal without ever distorting), then he would not have had to add any gain in the editing and production stages. It might be more useful to think of it in terms of having the optimal level at every stage (each piece of equipment) in the audio chain. So while the definition above - a udio that goes into a device at one level and comes out of that device at the same level, is technically correct. It was too low at one point and much too high at another. There was not attempt to keep the audio gain the same at all points in the process. You may wonder how you can have an audio signal that is simultaneously too soft AND too loud? That's how. In fact he turned it up by too much, resulting in distortion. The problem was that by turning low-level voice recording up by a lot, he also turned up the noise by A LOT. So in order for the audio to be heard, my friend used recording software to turn the volume up (increase the gain) before saving it. The interface box gain setting was too low, so the recording came out too "quiet" (too low a level). When recording a vocal, a friend of mine plugged an expensive microphone into his interface box. In our post " 5-Dollar vs 500-Dollar Mic," you can hear how audio can be ruined even when you record with expensive gear. I think the best way to explain this is by describing what can happen when audio is nowhere near unity gain. Technically it means " Audio that goes into a device at one level and comes out of that device at the same level is said to be at unity gain.". So what you need is a good balance between "loud enough and too loud." So what is "unity gain" again? ![]() However, if the gain is too high, the electronic components will overload and cause distortion, which is a terrible fuzzy, distorted sound that ruins your audio. The better that ratio, the better the audio quality, generally. The reason this is important is that you can get an excellent signal-to-noise ratio by keeping the signal (your voice, say) much louder than any noise (system hiss, background noise, room noise, etc.) that might also get recorded. Again, technically this should say "record at as high a signal (gain) level as possible without it ever being TOO high." One of our tips on getting the best audio (see Improve The Quality Of The Audio You Record At Home – Tip 3), is to record as loud as possible without distorting. That is essentially the goal of unity gain anyway. What do you really need to know?īut what you SHOULD understand is how to get good sound quality that has the lowest noise and does does not distort (meaning something was too loud* at some point in the recording). I can probably count the number of times I've ever uttered the term "unity gain" on the fingers of one hand.Īnd if you're you're mostly just recording at home using a USB interface (like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) going straight into your computer, the simplicity of your setup often takes care of any huge problems with unity gain. I'm not entirely convinced you do need to know about the term, exactly. ![]() So why do you need to know what it means? Here is yet another term that not only sounds confusing - not quite seeming to describe what it actually means but actually IS confusing.

Linguist blogs2/3/2024 ![]() Recalling memories when you were out with friends, the jokes you made, the discussions you had they all happened in a certain language, a certain space, with specific people. Mother tongues represent more than just the language you hear at home, it is the experiences you make through that language in that place you call home. ![]() When you have a certain nationality or mother tongue, you identify with that country/language as it is part of your life. Languages are, in my eyes, a similar concept to nationality. So language for me is not just a useful tool for communication, but it is a symbol for our country, for a small collective standing together as one, fighting against language deaths. We fought many wars, and albeit the results, we always stood together, sharing common values, living the same history. We are proud of our language (as is every nation I assume) as it symbolizes our independence, our uniqueness, our history. Just be prepared to get into a heated argument as people might insult you for assuming such a thing. If you ever want to get into a discussion with a Luxembourgish person, simply tell them that Luxembourgish is a dialect of German or French, or a mix of different languages which does not qualify for an actual language. Being such a small nation, we feel the need to cling on to our uniqueness, often by emphasizing that we have our own language. I finally found someone I could identify with, simply by speaking the same language.Ī more relatable example of language and identity is when I am actually back home in Luxembourg. Without asking too much, I feel like knowing that person, simply by sharing the same language, as I know that we share a common set of values, traditions and culture from our mother land. I immediately create a more personal relatio n with that person as I feel more closely connected to him/her. When talking to someone in Luxembourgish in Maastricht, it does not feel like the Netherlands anymore, but rather like being back home. It took me 14 periods of university to finally find someone in a tutorial who speaks Luxembourgish. While I can express myself in English in an educated, proficient manner, the feeling I get when talking to someone in English is far from when I am able to communicate in Luxembourgish. I speak English pretty much all the time, which although it comes naturally to me, is not the same as my mother tongue Luxembourgish. I live in Maastricht now for almost 3 years. ![]() Luxembourgish? Oh, you mean the German dialect? But how does this link play a role in my life? Well, let me tell you about it. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”. ![]() I find the quote by Nelson Mandela important in this context as it depicts the importance and the link of language and identity: “If you talk to a man in language he understands, that goes to his head. But identities can also be collective in the sense that a collective of people shares the same values, history, culture and, interesting to create a link with our topic, language. Identities can be individual in the sense that each person has his or her own identity which is comprised of culture, history, value and character. This common language creates a common history, especially since languages are often regional and hence tell the story of a collective. Languages are unique and have a history as well. Language is used to express ourselves, express our feelings, thoughts and share our culture and history with others. Language is much more than a simple stringing together of words in a coherent manner. So without any further ado, let us dive right into it.īefore starting to tell you about my own experience with language identity, I want to explain what language identity actually is in my opinion. I am going to talk about my own personal experience of language identity and reflect on how and why language is such an important factor when it comes to identity. In today’s blog post I will talk about language and identity two concepts that are, in my opinion, closely linked together. Welcome back to the fifth iteration of my blog. Well hello there fellow language enthusiasts.

Warp frontier review2/3/2024 Approximately 5 hours of play were devoted to the single-player mode and the game was not completed. There are no multiplayer modes. ![]() This copy of the game was obtained via publisher and reviewed on PC. Rating: 8 out of 10ĭisclosures: This game is developed and published by Brawsome. This well-written, well-designed point-and-click adventure please genre fans and - perhaps - might even entice a few newcomers to try this storied genre. In total, Warp Frontier was an unexpected surprise. Constantly going back and forth to move the fuses around various slots to continue exploring was a pain. With that said, there were a couple of sections which I found more tedious than the rest, like having to explore a darkened mine with only two fuses. Things like having to care after the ship and the variety of different replies that Cassini gives if we try to use an object in the wrong way instead of one generic “ it doesn’t work“. In fact, the amount of detail that Brawsome managed to put in with the voicework and script is fantastic. There are a few instances where an actor is clearly using a cheap microphone but, for the most part, the performances are surprisingly good. This is expertly done.ĭespite this being an indie game with a small budget, the game is fully voiced with a strong cast, offering the unusual choice of Australian actors, which reflects the dev’s country of origin. ![]() Also, if those hints aren’t enough, there is a fully-fledged hint system which offers gradual nudges so that one can start with small pointers without spoiling entire sections. Those observations, though, will many times double as hints. That said, Warp Frontier‘s design saves the player a lot of clicking since there is no Examine function - Cassini simply makes automatic textual observations when the pointer passes over objects. In terms of gameplay, expect the usual clicking on things to collect items, solve puzzles and talk. Meanwhile, his family needs attention and he’ll have to deal with a wife who doesn’t seem to appreciate him that much… To get to the bottom of this, he will have to work with a mysterious organization while also keeping up appearances in his usual police role. While at first we will be taking the police captain on his patrol, the narrative soon takes a turn when Cassini stumbles into some friends from the old days - he thought they were gone for good, but apparently something much more sinister has happened. While at first it acts only as a kind of sidekick in the vein of a humorous Star Wars droid, it’s soon revealed that MAC has a different function - it will be a constant judge and observer in everything we do. For example, Cassini’s ship has to be cared after, and there are some concerns such as maintaining atmospheric pressure and preventing any leakage in the hull.Ĭassini is accompanied on his rounds by MAC, a robotic ball-like companion. Despite not offering full ‘freedom’ in space that one might expect from an exploration title, Warp Frontier succeeds in making us live the routine of a cosmic police captain. The narrative is spread throughout many places to visit and characters to talk to. There is a bit of everything here, all of it flavored with classic science fiction. In the space suit of police captain Vincent Cassini, we’ll find ourselves solving war crimes that have caused the thousands of people to disappear from the planet Cetus, on top of having to deal with family issues and work woes. We had Strangeland earlier this year, and now Warp Frontier.ĭeveloped by Australian studio Brawsome, this point-and-click’s plot feels very much the first season of a rich sci-fi space opera. Sure, one could make a ‘safe’ and nostalgic affair in the vein of classic Lucasarts and Sierra titles from the ’90s, but haven’t we already got enough of those? We should instead celebrate those few brave products that go in a different direction, along with those that tell fascinating stories. HIGH Incredibly well-done narrative with strong voice acting.ĭespite what one might think and the numerous tools available, making a decent point-and-click is quite hard.

Witching hour2/2/2024 ![]() But she was warned of this being by Aaron’s knowledge, her new-found immensely grown family, and Michael, who studied with the Talamasca when Aaron came into his life. He eventually enlightened Rowan of his past, his intentions, and his knowledge, for she had the gift to see him after his mother’s death. Lasher, an ignorant being who learned over the generations of human nature to educate himself in this new realm. He had been with the Mayfairs for thirteen generations, and was summoned by an ancestor of Rowan’s named Suzanne. Lasher destroys everything that was established between Michael and Rowan, and he is a character that seduces the Mayfairs into his need to be human. The apparition is the Protagonist of the story, and goes by the name of “Lasher”. ![]() Her passion to heal the wounded, her sixth sense to stop the wounds of the sick, and her dangerous potential to kill without knowing it…or does she? These three main characters learn of the history, the scandals, the incest, the beauty, and the apparition. Rowan then learned of her family’s meaning and history, and her life started to make more sense as she got involved. This also gave her signs of coincidence with Michael’s life and hers. Rowan did not know a single thing about her family history, as she was left in the dark her whole life by her aunt Ellie who became her legal guardian the day she was born.Īfter her notification from a family member that her mother died, this gave her permission to learn her family history and go to New Orleans where her family resided to mourn her catatonic mother’s death. As he watched Michael and Rowan from the corners of darkness, he intervened their lives to enlighten their knowledge of Rowan’s family history-and its dangerous potential. He devoted his life to the history of the Mayfair witches, and his organization had compiled a history of the Mayfairs since the days of the 17th century inquisition in Europe. Aaron studied a family called the Mayfairs in New Orleans, because his organization had believed the Mayfairs to be witches. Another major character of the story, Englishmen Aaron Lightner, was a part of an archaic organization known as the “Talamasca”. Rowan Mayfair, was the veritable love of his life.Īfter he discovered how much he deeply loved Rowan, he began to reminisce the images of his purpose that certain elements and images of his childhood hinted him to return to the house he had been fascinated within New Orleans as a child. Something that had to do with a doorway, and the number thirteen.Īfter isolation from the press of the burden of his powers, he found himself wanting to go back on the deck of the boat where he was rescued. He was burdened by the images and the vision after his death, that he had a purpose, that he was sent for a reason. Michael also discovered that he had received the gift of seeing images by using his hands to touch objects, and that he chose to come back. Michael approached the rocks of the bay, thought of his life and emptiness, then he slipped and fell to his fatal doom in the sea.įound by a woman known as Rowan Mayfair, he discovered that he was dead for over an hour as he rested in the hospital. ![]() ![]() Our Antagonist Michael Curry, a 48-year old Irish man who had lost himself in a world in which he had accomplished his dreams, experienced his emotional pain, and yet he felt empty. Battery health 22/2/2024 Knowing that this is a 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro, I can then visit Apple’s support page on MacBook battery life to see that this device has a maximum cycle count of 1,000. From the Apple menu, select About this Mac… As you can see from the screenshot below, this provides information about the operating system version being used, as well as details about your Mac: About this Mac shows details on the model and year of the computer To determine the maximum cycle count for your MacBook, you’ll need to know the model name and year. For most new MacBook models, that number is 1,000 for older MacBooks, the cycle count can be as low as 300. When it gets to the point that your MacBook needs to be plugged in almost continuously in order to operate, it’s probably a good sign that the battery needs replacement.Įach model of MacBook has a specific maximum cycle count number for its battery. During those two days, I’ve experienced one charge cycle.Īfter the MacBook has reached Apple’s “maximum cycle count”, your MacBook still works - it just may not hold a complete charge and last as long when running on battery power. Let’s say that I take my MacBook Pro from 100% down to 50% on both Monday and Tuesday, plugging it in on Monday night to bring it back to 100% charge. A charge cycle means using all of the battery’s capacity - but not necessarily all at once. ![]() In this post, I’ll show you how to easily check the health of a MacBook battery and provide some ideas on replacing the battery if testing shows that it’s on its last legs…Īpple’s guideline for MacBook batteries is that they will retain 80% of the original charge capacity after a certain number of complete charge cycles. Does the battery on your old MacBook seem to be unable to hold a charge anymore? Is that used MacBook Pro you’re buying from a friend any good? Batteries are the lifeblood of our Mac notebooks, and fortunately it’s quite easy to get a feel for whether that battery pack still has some life to it or if it needs a replacement.

Brake pedal for bosch ibooster2/2/2024 ![]() Lidar sensor: In addition to radar, video, and ultrasonic sensors, Bosch also uses lidar sensors in its automated test vehicles. Bosch’s radar and video sensors capture and transmit important real-time traffic data for the creation of high-resolution maps for automated driving. ![]() The maps provide vehicles with information about changing traffic situations, such as traffic jams or construction, that fall outside the area on-board sensors can monitor. Maps: Without high-resolution, up-to-date maps, there can be no automated driving. In a standard master cylinder, the power provided by the booster is transformed into hydraulic pressure. The control unit calculates the triggering signal for the electric motor, which uses a two-stage transmission to convert its torque into the required power assistance. In the iBooster, the actuation of the brake pedal is recorded by the built-in pedal-travel sensor and transmitted to the control unit. It can be used in all powertrain concepts and is especially well suited for hybrid and electric vehicles. IBooster: With the iBooster, Bosch has developed a vacuum-independent, electromechanical brake booster that meets the requirements for modern braking systems. This information is superimposed on the vehicle’s surroundings in such a way that the two seem to blend seamlessly at a distance of around two meters ahead of the vehicle. By using head-up displays, Bosch puts information such as speed, navigation prompts, and warnings directly in the driver’s field of view. With its innovative display instruments, Bosch is already offering promising solutions in this area as well: the TFT instrument cluster, for instance, offers maximum flexibility in processing combined with brilliant clarity. The driver must be able to intuitively understand and use the system. HMI: Automated driving will change the human-machine interface, and calls for modern concepts for communication between car and driver. ![]() Bosch offers ESP as a modular concept that offers the right system for all circumstances and requirements. In this instance, the ESP brake control system and iBooster electromechanical brake booster (see below) can independently brake the vehicle without the driver having to intervene. To retain maximum control over these systems in the event of the failure, redundancy must be built into the system as a safeguard. Delegating responsibility for driving to the vehicle places particular demands on safety-critical systems such as the brakes. Department of Transportation and National Traffic Highway Safety Association, for example.ĮSP: The electronic stability program also plays a key role when it comes to automated driving. This technology will enable automakers to comply with the safety requirements as proposed in the Federal Automated Vehicles Policy documents from the U.S. Even in fall-back mode, fail-operational capability allows drivers and automated cars to continue using essential steering functions while maintaining about 50 percent electric steering support in the rare case of a malfunction. For instance, connected vehicles are warned in advance of danger spots before a blind bend or hilltop and can ease off the accelerator in preparation.Įlectric steering: Fail-safe, electric power steering is a key technology for automated driving. This is beneficial for the comfort and safety of the driving experience. Connected Horizon is what allows automated vehicles to think ahead. This system enables a dynamic preview of the upcoming route and corresponding adjustments to driving strategy. This can be achieved only by connecting the vehicle to a server, for which Bosch developed its Connected Horizon solution. For instance, they need real-time traffic data on congestion and accidents. Few automotive suppliers worldwide have as much knowledge in this area as Bosch, in part because the supplier of technology and services manufactures most of the components needed for automated driving listed below:Ĭonnected Horizon: Automated vehicles rely on environmental information – information that goes beyond what sensors can gather. The key to success is an in-depth understanding of all vehicle systems. Automated driving impacts the entire car: its powertrain, brakes, steering, display instruments, navigation, and sensors, as well as connectivity inside and outside the vehicle.

Ariana grande the voice2/2/2024 ![]() Every once in a while on Twitter, usually around the time the show is gearing up for a new season, you’ll see a viral tweet pointing this out, challenging social media to name just one winner or comparing the show’s lack of care and attentiveness for its contestants to its Fox predecessor. In the years that The Voice has become a broadcast television mainstay, much has been said of the competition’s glaring dilemma: its inability to produce successful or, at the very least, recognizable artists. More insidiously though, The Voice has successfully cashed in on viewers’-including the fame-hungry musicians that audition for the show-naive presumptions about celebrities, their supposed magic and the overestimated power of our proximity to them in favor of tangible outcomes for these immensely gifted competitors who deserve better than hyperbolic compliments from Kelly Clarkson and promised Instagram exposure from Grande. During a time when cruelty on reality-competition shows is phasing out, this #positivevibes ethos has worked in the show’s favor and even inspired American Idol to eliminate “bad” auditions. While judges for more cutthroat competitions like American Idol and The X Factor have historically been less approachable and more daunting-they purposely hold the position of judges, not coaches after all- The Voice has always presented its stars as the most caring and good-natured people in the industry, suggesting that you actually should meet your heroes and even feel safe enough in their presence to be the most vulnerable version of yourself. It becomes clear thirty minutes into Season 21’s premiere that The Voice will always be a protracted celebrity meet-and-greet, first and foremost. But while Grande and her legion of Arianators will most likely make some kind of impact in this department, the charismatic, astute coach still can’t save the show from itself. As with the addition of Miley Cyrus in 2016 and Nick Jonas last year, The Voice seems to be making another desperate bid for younger millennials’ and Gen Z’s attention, as the show’s viewership has increasingly skewed older like most network television in the streaming era. But the announcement of Grande on The Voice felt slightly more urgent and tactical, particularly since the recent departure of one of the show’s inaugural coaches, Adam Levine, who had more mainstream hits and relevancy amongst a younger, more female crowd as compared to artists like Blake Shelton, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend or even Gwen Stefani in the on-and-off years she’s coached. Since its inception, the NBC reality-competition program has always put its celebrities front and center, taking cues from American Idolin its later seasons and promoting its star power and coach dynamics above the amateur talent. The pop superstar even received a “thank u, next” button on her rotating chair. Over the course of the two-hour premiere, the “Positions” singer was greeted with as much fanfare and lip service from the contestants and her fellow coaches as one would expect, first stealing the spotlight in a group performance of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and remaining the center of her colleagues’ stale comedic banter throughout the show. On Monday night, The Voicewelcomed its latest coach and one of the most high-profile artists the singing competition has managed to acquire in its 10-year run, Ariana Grande. |
